FAQ

Where do you do lessons and guided trips?

Centrally located near Charlottesville, VA, Shenandoah Lines takes peoples on trips throughout Central and Western Virginia. We can take you mountain stream fishing in Shenandoah National Park as well as other local streams, conveniently located near Washington D.C., Charlottesville, Richmond and Roanoke. I guide wading trips across 15+ beautiful streams and miles of stocked rivers, giving anglers plenty of water to explore.

Lessons can be taught on the river or any lake/body of water that is convenient. Mint Springs in Crozet is a great place for first timers, as the lake is open without a tree line. Other great places include the South River in Waynesboro, Beaver Creek, Lickinghole Creek, and possibly Sugar Hollow depending on skill level.

Guided trips can either be done backcountry mountain stream that involves hiking, or many other local rivers in the area. Some places include Mossy Creek, Moormans River, South River, Doyles River, Conway River, Jackson River, and many others.

When is the best time to book a guided trip or a lesson?

Lessons can be scheduled year round. There's no better time than now to learn how to fly fish! Guided trips can also be done year round, with the mid-summertime being location dependent. Trout season is best spring and fall, but you can fly fish in the winter as well.

Do I need a fishing license to participate?

Yes, all fishers will need to purchase a license prior to their lesson/trip. All anglers ages 16 and up need a Virginia State Freshwater License. Fishing for trout between October 1st and June 15th requires a trout license as well. Additionally, Trout Unlimited requires a license for waters that are stocked by them during the stocking season. Your guide will help you determine the correct licensure based on your trip.

What should I bring to a guided trip or lesson?

We provide rods, reels, and all tackle (unless you have a favorite rod/reel, then feel free to bring it)! Unfortunately, at this time, we are not able to provide waders, but there are a lot of trips that do not require them. We also bring sunscreen and bug spray, as well as water. Lunch is provided on full day trips.

Polarized sunglasses, your fishing license, and clothes/shoes you don't mind getting wet are good if you are doing a trip that doesn't require waders.

How do you accept forms of payment?

Cash, checks, and Venmo/Paypal are accepted as forms of payment after trips. Full and half day trips require a $100 deposit to be made before the trip. Tips are always appreciated.

What happens if there is bad weather the day of my trip?

Your guide will contact you if the weather is not appropriate for a fishing trip. In this case, you will be provided a full refund and the ability to reschedule.

What is your age limit for lessons?

Participants should be old enough to focus for a 45 minute lesson. We are more than happy to accommodate younger children, and we can teach how to cast without a real hook at first. â€‹
